(Eiji Tsuburaya) 。
(Cult

Introduction
A Transnational Convergence of Aesthetics:
Market Expansion and Cultural Exploration from Japanese "Tokusatsu" to Hong
Kong's "The Super Inframan"
Introduction: What is "Tokusatsu"?
The term "Tokusatsu"
originates from Japan, literally meaning "special photography." In the
context of contemporary cinema, it represents far more than a mere
filming technique; it has evolved into a unique cinematic style that
blends a craftsman's spirit with surreal imagination. The founding
father of this aesthetic was Eiji Tsuburaya, widely revered as the "God
of Tokusatsu." By flawlessly combining miniatures, suitmation (actors in
creature suits), and practical effects, he created monster spectacles
and heroic epics that defied belief during an era of limited resources.
In the mid-1960s, Tsuburaya's creation Ultraman made
its grand debut. It not only ignited a massive craze in Japan but also
swept through Asia like wildfire, planting the cultural seeds of "giant
heroes and justice" in the minds of countless young individuals.
Shaw Brothers' Cultural
Acumen and Transnational Collaboration through "Reverse Importation" of
Technology
When this Japanese
Tokusatsu craze reached Hong Kong in the early 1970s, the astute Hong
Kong cinematic giant, Shaw Brothers Corporation, immediately recognized
a burgeoning market opportunity. At that time, Kamen
Rider, imported from Japan's Toei
Company, sparked an unprecedented sensation in both Hong Kong and
Taiwan. This prompted Sir Run Run Shaw, the head of Shaw Brothers at the
time, to break away from the traditional framework of kung fu and wuxia
films to pioneer a brand-new path for Chinese-language cinema with
Tokusatsu elements.
This was by no means
a blind imitation, but rather a high-caliber transnational transfer of
technology. To ensure the film possessed a visual texture on par with,
or even superior to, its Japanese counterparts, Shaw Brothers—under the
production planning of Leonard Ho (Chua Lam)—allocated a hefty budget to
invite Rikumao Mikami, a top-tier Japanese Tokusatsu specialist, to
assist in Hong Kong. Mikami had been deeply involved in designing the
costumes and props for the original heroes and monsters of the Japanese Kamen
Rider series. His involvement injected
an authentic Tokusatsu craftsmanship pedigree into the Hong Kong crew.
With a fantastical
screenplay by Ni Kuang, direction by Hua Shan, and starring the
then-newcomer Danny Lee in the lead role, The
Super Inframan burst onto the silver
screen in 1975. This film boldly fused Hong Kong's hard-hitting kung fu
and wire-work stunts with Japanese Tokusatsu suit-battles, ray beams,
and miniature-scale destruction. It successfully pioneered Hong Kong
sci-fi action cinema, leaving a highly groundbreaking mark on Hong
Kong's film history.
The Grand Vision Behind the
Naming: Why "The Super Inframan" (Chinese Superhero) and Not "Hong Kong
Superhero"?
Reflecting on this
history, many critics often raise a core question: Since this film was
produced at the Shaw Studios in Clear Water Bay by a local Hong Kong
crew, why wasn't it given a localized title like "Hong Kong Superhero,"
but instead crowned as "The Super Inframan" (literally Chinese
Superman)? According to the historical
context of the time and internal Shaw Brothers documents, this choice
perfectly reflected Sir Run Run Shaw's commercial strategic vision and
his grand vision for Chinese cultural identity. This naming logic can be
deeply analyzed through the following three dimensions:
A Global Chinese Market
Strategy Transcending Regional Boundaries
In the 1970s, the market
positioning of Shaw Brothers was never confined to the small local
market of Hong Kong. The tentacles of Sir Run Run Shaw's movie empire
extended to Taiwan, Southeast Asia (Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand), and
Chinatowns worldwide. Naming it "Hong Kong Superhero" would have
inadvertently trivialized it into a local regional product, limiting its
box office appeal overseas. Conversely, the title "Chinese Superman"
possessed a grander universality, capable of directly invoking cultural
identity and curiosity among Chinese-speaking audiences globally.
Cultural Nationalism to
Compete with Foreign Superheroes
In the cultural
market of that era, the West had America's Superman,
while the East had Japan's Ultraman.
Sir Run Run Shaw believed that the Chinese world must also have a
superhero standing on equal footing, possessing a matching sense of
technology and power. Crowning the hero with "Chinese" was an effort to
hoist a distinct cultural banner on the international film stage,
declaring to the world that Chinese people also have their own
modernized sci-fi protector.
The Confucian Fusion of
Martial Arts Spirit and Modern Sci-Fi
In the script of The
Super Inframan penned by Ni Kuang,
although the protagonist Rayma's (played by Danny Lee) transformation
relies on modern technological modification by a scientific research
institute, the core message he conveys remains the noble spirit of
traditional Chinese wuxia novels—serving the public good and sacrificing
oneself for righteousness. Naming the film with "Chinese" was
essentially a bold cultural graft, taking the "sci-fi shell" of Japanese
and American superheroes and merging it with the "chivalrous core" of
traditional Chinese literati.
A Historical Retrospective Half a Century Later:
1975–2025
The 1975 film The
Super Inframan was
a cultural collision that, at the time, was highly experimental
in nature. Although it did not achieve the expected box-office
miracle in the Hong Kong market back then, its subsequent
"reverse importation" into Europe, America, and Japan led it to
be revered as a hall-of-fame, legendary masterpiece by countless
cult film enthusiasts. As the preface to this special feature,
we are not merely looking back at the birth of a suited hero; we
are deconstructing the grand journey of how Hong Kong filmmakers
in the 1970s, armed with immense courage, assimilated both
Japanese Tokusatsu craftsmanship and Western sci-fi concepts to
pioneer an unprecedented new frontier of genre cinema on the
soil of the Orient's Pearl.

Superman
Ultraman
(Cult

Preface: Returning to the 1975 The Super
Inframan
It was the summer of 1975 when Hong Kong’s silver
screen lit up for the very first time with a superhero of our own. The Super
Inframan was far more than a mere Tokusatsu fantasy; it was a cultural
adventure. In an era dominated by kung fu and wuxia, Shaw Brothers Studio
utilized a flash of red and silver light to open a gateway to the future for
Chinese-language cinema. Half a century has passed, yet that courage to dare to
imagine continues to shine brightly in the hearts of cinephiles.
Courage Beneath the Spotlight
In August 1975, the Shaw Brothers film The Super
Inframan was released. It was an era when technology and fantasy began to
permeate popular culture; Japan's Kamen Rider and Ultraman had conquered the
whole of Asia, and children across Southeast Asia were captivated by the battles
between suited heroes and monsters. In Hong Kong, however, this was a pioneering
feat built entirely from scratch. Sir Run Run Shaw, possessed of a singular
vision, resolved to produce a "superhero" belonging to the Chinese world—this
was not merely a market experiment, but a declaration. Director Hua Shan brought
an experimental spirit to everything from set construction to character design.
That superhero, clad in red and silver armor and harnessing the power of thunder
to combat the evil Demon Princess Elzebub (Princess Elzebub/Ice River Demon
Lord), was not only a child's dream but also the faith of a generation of
filmmakers: that Chinese-language cinema could possess its own vision of the
future. Under the leadership of Sir Run Run Shaw, Shaw Brothers Studio astutely
recognized the immense appeal of these "superhero-style" films to teenage
audiences, and thus decided to employ Hong Kong resources and creativity to
forge a sci-fi hero for the Chinese world.
Both an Experiment and a Heritage
Tokusatsu filmmaking demands colossal resources and
technological support, posing a challenge that was nigh impossible for Hong Kong
at the time. Sparks, explosions, lightning, and monster suits were all realized
entirely through manual craft and sheer ingenuity. Though the visual effects
appeared unrefined, they carried a rare sincerity and confidence—a tapestry
woven from "Eastern craftsmanship" and "cinematic dreams." While The Super
Inframan was not a box-office miracle, it unlocked an entirely new genre of
creative subject matter. From then on, the fusion of fantasy and action became a
new vocabulary for Hong Kong cinema. The creative outputs of Li Han-hsiang, Tsui
Hark, Johnnie To, Wong Kar-wai, and later figures like Louis Koo, can all be
traced back in varying degrees to the experiments of this film. From the flying
swords of Zu Warriors from the Magic Mountain to the exo-suit armor of Warriors
of Future, the shadow of The Super Inframan has never ceased to glimmer across
the future of our cinema.
A Retrospective of Half a Century
Looking back at The Super Inframan fifty years
later, we might chuckle at its clumsy monsters or exaggerated lightning effects,
but we ought to offer a smiling salute instead, for it represents the most
romantic adventure in the history of Hong Kong cinema. It cannot be deemed
plagiarism, but rather an awakening of imagination; nor is it a mere imitation,
but the prelude to pioneering innovation. Under the leadership of Sir Run Run
Shaw, Shaw Brothers Studio astutely recognized the immense appeal of these
"superhero-style" films to teenage audiences, deciding to employ Hong Kong
resources and creativity to forge a sci-fi hero for the Chinese world. This was
no easy task. In the 1970s, the Hong Kong film industry’s expertise was
primarily rooted in kung fu, crime, and period dramas; sci-fi Tokusatsu belonged
to a high-cost, high-risk genre. Yet, The Super Inframan was produced on a grand
scale, integrating mechanical monsters, a massive base, and lightning special
effects all into a single film, featuring costume designs that fused Eastern
mythology with futuristic technology. Director Hua Shan and the Japanese design
team drew reference from the Tokusatsu style of Japan's Toei Company, while
injecting local martial arts and dramatic rhythms, allowing the work to radiate
a harmonious synthesis of Western and Eastern energy.
Reaching the Year 2025
As The Super Inframan celebrates its 50th
anniversary in 2025, it has evolved into a symbol. It represents the courage of
1970s Hong Kong filmmakers to innovate, and serves as a testament to the "Asian
sci-fi dream" that the local film industry had quietly embarked upon decades
ago. Rewatching the film today, one might find the special effects somewhat
crude and the editing naive; yet that pioneering spirit—the palpable sensation
of a steadfast belief that "Hong Kong people can also film their own
superhero"—remains resplendent. This is precisely why it remains timeless and
forever fresh.
The Super Inframan is not merely a childhood memory
It is a symbol of an era, born of a dedicated group
of creators who chose to depict the future through the power of fantasy. Fifty
years later, as we look back at this "one-and-only" endeavor, we should regard
it with profound respect. It is precisely such adventures that allowed the
creativity of Hong Kong cinema to be recognized by the world. When that flash of
red light appears once more on the silver screen, what we behold is not just a
Tokusatsu film from 1975, but the growth of a city and proof of a group of
filmmakers who dared to dream. That audacity, that innocence, remains the most
moving genetic code of Hong Kong cinema.
The
Super Inframan) 』

(Joseph
Brenner) 將本片輸入美國, 以《Infra-Man》為名推廣, 廣告口號「The Man Beyond Bionics!」
Million Dollar
(Biologically
Altered
Kamen
I. Shaw Brothers Cinema
On one hand, Shaw Brothers Cinema drove the industrialization of Hong Kong
cinema and propelled wuxia and kung fu films into global popularity. On the
other hand, it established "Hong Kong cinema" as an international representative
of Chinese-language culture and action aesthetics, which played a crucial role
in shaping Hong Kong's image. During the 1950s and 1960s, Sir Run Run Shaw
established the "Shaw Studio" in Hong Kong, building large-scale studios modeled
after Hollywood to form a factory-style production system. With a consistently
high annual output, it became one of the largest film companies in the
Chinese-speaking world. Shaw Brothers pioneered various genres, ranging from
Huangmei opera films, period dramas, and wuxia to "New Wave kung fu films,"
skyrocketing directors like King Hu and Lau Kar-leung to fame, as well as action
stars such as Ti Lung, David Chiang, and Alexander Fu Sheng, thereby
consolidating Hong Kong's position as the hub of Chinese-language cinema. After
the 1970s, facing the rise of Golden Harvest and the Bruce Lee craze, Shaw
Brothers shifted toward fiercer kung fu films, co-productions with the West, and
investments in international movies, maintaining its influence in overseas
markets until its downsizing in the mid-to-late 1980s. This elevated Hong Kong's
international reputation through the "Hong Kong Kung Fu" brand. Films like The
One-Armed Swordsman and The 36th Chamber of Shaolin led global audiences to
directly associate precise martial arts choreography, realistic violence, and
"kung fu aesthetics" with Hong Kong, constructing its image as the "center of
Chinese-language cinema." Shaw Brothers films were widely screened in Southeast
Asia and Chinatown theaters across the United States, causing overseas Chinese
and Western cinephiles alike to view Hong Kong as the nexus of Chinese cinema,
which reinforced Hong Kong's status as an international metropolis and a major
exporter of culture.
II. The Origin of The Super Inframan
The Super Inframan was born out of Shaw Brothers' desire to "localize" the
Japanese Tokusatsu craze, while simultaneously experimenting with a Hong Kong
superhero movie that could be expanded into a franchise, blending kung fu
elements with a child-oriented sci-fi genre. When released in 1975, the studio
was clearly targeting the massive craze among children in Hong Kong and East
Asia who were obsessed with Kamen Rider and Ultraman, attempting to create a
"superhero with Chinese flavor" while expanding into new markets. Heavily
influenced by the Japanese Tokusatsu boom, series like Kamen Rider, Ultraman,
and Mirrorman became immensely popular in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and South Korea
during the early 1970s. Television reruns drove the market for merchandise,
toys, and magazines, proving the immense potential of the children's Tokusatsu
market. Shaw Brothers was searching for new genres and new audiences; as
traditional wuxia, period dramas, and Huangmei opera films had reached their
peak, the studio needed fresh subject matter to attract children and teenagers.
Fusing "kung fu + sci-fi + Tokusatsu" allowed them to extend and utilize their
existing expertise in action choreography and studio set construction.
III. Constructing The Super Inframan
The literal translation of the film’s title is "China Superman," a deliberate
conceptual echo to the Western Superman and Japanese heroes, while
simultaneously emphasizing a localized identity where the protagonist belongs to
the Science Headquarters, battling the Demon Princess Elzebub (Princess Elzebub)
and her horde of monsters—a heroic narrative imbued with nationalistic colors.
An attempt was made to expand into overseas markets: Joseph Brenner later
imported this film into the United States, promoting it under the title The
Super Inframan (or Infra-Man). The advertising tagline, "The Man Beyond
Bionics!", intentionally hitched a ride on the popularity of the American
television series The Six Million Dollar Man, reflecting that Shaw Brothers had
anticipated the international sales potential of this genre from the very
beginning. The project's direction was driven by Shaw Brothers' top executives,
who intended it to be the "first superhero film set in Hong Kong." It was shot
using shooting scripts and storyboards—reputedly the first time Shaw Brothers
utilized storyboards on such a massive scale—to facilitate the management of
extensive special effects, explosions, and monster sequences. The story was set
around "the ancient Demon Princess Elzebub awakening after a ten-million-year
slumber to lead her monster army in an invasion of Earth," with the Science
Headquarters deploying a cyborg (the Super Inframan) to retaliate. This was
clearly adapted from the Japanese henshin hero (transforming hero) template,
integrating elements such as a scientific headquarters, combatants (minions),
and motorcycle chases. Spearheaded by Shaw Brothers executives, the project was
envisioned as the "first superhero movie with Hong Kong as its backdrop" and
utilized extensive storyboarding, marking a milestone as Shaw Brothers' first
large-scale application of storyboards to precisely control intricate special
effects, pyrotechnics, and monster brawls.
Screenplay and Style
Screenwriter Mr. Ni Kuang seamlessly blended his hallmark sci-fi elements
(mutants, super-powered armor, underground kingdoms, etc.) with the frantic
pacing of Shaw Brothers’ kung fu films. He conceptualized the protagonist’s
origin via the "BDX Project" (Biologically Altered Human), a biological
modification concept that yielded a narrative packed with dense martial arts
combat and consecutive monster battles. In terms of character design, the female
antagonist "Demon Princess Elzebub" combined Western demonic iconography with
East Asian folklore of enchantresses, while the Science Headquarters mirrored
the aesthetic of Japan's Science Special Search Party (SSSP) or Earth Defense
Force (EDF), emphasizing high technology and collective, structured action. The
Super Inframan (Rayma / Infra-Man) was designed by Mr. Ni Kuang as an ordinary
scientist transformed into a red-and-silver solar-powered warrior. Throughout
the film, the protagonist unleashes an array of special techniques heavily
inspired by Japanese Tokusatsu, primarily used to vanquish demons and monsters.
The primary special techniques include: the Thunder Fists (閃電拳), which shoot a
laser beam of one trillion watts per square centimeter, ultimately defeating the
Demon Princess; the Fire-and-Wind Missiles (風火彈), dart-like projectiles that
spray immense flames to scorch enemies; the Soul-Chasing Kicks (追魂腿), which
unleash jet-propulsion fire attacks from the soles of his feet resembling giant
firecrackers; the Deadly Light Blades (死光刀), a powerful death-ray finisher; and
the Solar Armor / Solar Ray(太陽甲), an ultimate desperate countermeasure reserved
for critical moments. The character design masterfully fused the Kamen Rider
transformation style. For the villain, Ni Kuang created the subterranean female
monarch who had slumbered for ten million years, leading icy monsters to invade
and eventually transforming into a dragon-like boss character, blending the
Western demon Beelzebub with Chinese sorceress legends. The script highlighted
her calculated plots to counter the hero. The Science Headquarters
team—comprising Professor Liu Ying-te, his daughter Liu Mei-mei, and Xiao Hu—served
as a family-style supporting cast. Intentionally structured by Ni Kuang to
provide tactical backup to the hero, they introduced localized Hong Kong-style
humorous dialogue and motorcycle pursuits, setting the film apart from pure
Japanese Tokusatsu while successfully delivering an impact as thrilling as Kamen
Rider.
(Joseph
Beyond Bionics!
(The Six Million
Dollar
(henshin
(Biologically
Altered

The Production Team of The Super Inframan
Main
Behind-the-Scenes Crew
The Executive Producer / Producer role was held by Runme Shaw, who represented
Shaw Brothers in terms of funding and overall supervision. The director was Hua
Shan, originally a cinematographer who worked on classics like Come Drink with
Me, possessing an excellent grasp of fast-paced action sequences. The screenplay
was penned by Ni Kuang, who was responsible for the overarching story and
character concepts. Cinematography was handled by Tadashi Nishimoto (under the
Chinese pseudonym Hsi-mu Chang-hung), a Japanese cinematographer who had already
been working in Hong Kong, helping to forge a visual texture and camera movement
akin to Japanese Tokusatsu. The film was edited by Chiang Hsing-lung, with music
composed by Frankie Chan (Chen Yung-yu). However, the film also heavily sampled
original background tracks from Japanese series like Ultra Seven and Mirrorman,
reflecting the reuse and reappropriation of Japanese Tokusatsu audio resources.
The costumes and monster suits were supplied by Japan’s Ekisu Productions, a
company that had crafted suits for numerous Toei superhero television shows,
bringing the aesthetic design of The Super Inframan incredibly close to the gold
standard of Japanese Tokusatsu.
Japan's Ekisu Productions is a model-making and special-effects team that was
highly active in the realm of Japanese Tokusatsu and kaiju (monster) cinema,
revered by film enthusiasts as one of the pillar behind-the-scenes companies of
the Showa kaiju era. Regarding its corporate nature and core members, Ekisu
Productions primarily contracted the design and fabrication of monsters,
characters, and special-effects models for major film studios. It operated as a
specialized, boutique modeling studio with a small team rather than a sprawling
animation or film production corporation. Its recognized core members included
technical visionaries and sculptors such as Masao Yagi, Keizo Murase, and Akira
Suzuki, who themselves are iconic figures in the field of Japanese Tokusatsu
modeling. The studio was deeply involved in the creature and prop fabrication
for several of Daiei Film's classic Tokusatsu productions, most notably the
Gamera (Giant Monster Gamera) and Daimajin series, helping to forge these
legendary monster and statue silhouettes. The vast majority of their portfolio
was concentrated within Showa-era monster and Tokusatsu cinema.
Main Cast and Tokusatsu Techniques
Danny Lee (Lee Sau-yin) starred as Rayma / The Super Inframan, projecting his
tough, leading-man persona—often seen in detective and kung fu roles—into this
superhero character. Terry Liu played the villainous Demon Princess Elzebub
(marketed as Princess Dragon Mom). Wang Hsieh portrayed Professor Liu Ying-te,
and Yuen Man-tzu played his daughter, Liu Mei-mei. Actors like Li Chien-lung
served as members of the Science Headquarters and supporting cast, with Li Chien-lung
still finding opportunities to showcase his kung fu martial arts movements in
the film. The production utilized an abundance of miniature scale models
(cities, high-voltage power towers, the Science Headquarters, etc.) paired with
actors in humanoid monster suits for the combat sequences, further amplified by
pyrotechnics and fire effects to depict scenes of urban destruction—a technique
clearly mirroring the stylistic approach of Toho and Tsuburaya Productions. The
Super Inframan possessed the ability to grow to a gigantic size to battle
monsters that had similarly scaled up. This follows the quintessential formula
of "actors in suits fighting monsters + giant-sized battles," and he even
deployed "one-time-only" giant transformations—a narrative trope identical to
the contemporary Japanese Tokusatsu convention of "introducing convenient new
skills precisely when the plot demands it." The suits and portions of the design
were provided by Ekisu Productions, which, along with the sampling of Ultra
Seven and Mirrorman soundtracks, demonstrates that Shaw Brothers directly
borrowed established Japanese resources. With a Japanese director of photography
and records indicating the involvement of Japanese designers in the character
and monster conceptualization, the overarching visual language closely aligned
with Toei and Tsuburaya lineages, even though the closing credits may not have
comprehensively listed the names of all the Japanese technical personnel
involved.

Ekisu
Productions

Tokusatsu Designer Rikumao Mikami’s
Conceptualization of The Super Inframan
Shaw Brothers Tokusatsu Designer Rikumao Mikami
The visual design of The Super Inframan was primarily reviewed, modified, and
finalized by the Japanese Tokusatsu designer Rikumao Mikami. The actual
fabrication of the suit was outsourced to Japan's Ekisu Productions, which was
then fine-tuned through integration with Shaw Brothers' in-house art department.
Featuring a predominantly red color palette, blue eyes, and a pair of horns atop
the head, the design drew inspiration from the modified-cyborg proportions of
Kamen Rider, while incorporating symbols of Chinese dragon horns to craft the
image of a "localized superhero." Rikumao Mikami was an acclaimed Japanese
Tokusatsu character designer who had contributed to the suit fabrication of
numerous Toei superhero series. To elevate the professional standard of the
production, Shaw Brothers specially invited him to oversee the modifications of
the protagonist’s combat armor. Though his name was omitted from the closing
credits, his invaluable contributions have been verified repeatedly by Hong Kong
film enthusiasts through oral histories and social media records (such as
discussions on Facebook regarding Danny Lee’s transformation sequences). Shaw
Brothers’ internal staff, including makeup artist Ng Mor-ching and costume
designer Lau Kai-yau, handled the detailed physical execution, but the core
silhouette and the horn configuration originated from the Japanese team.
The Conceptual Process of The Super Inframan
Dominant Red Palette: Stemming from the concept of a solar-powered warrior (as
set by Ni Kuang in the screenplay), red represented the national colors of China
as well as thermal energy. While reminiscent of a red Kamen Rider, expanding it
across the entire suit made the character easily identifiable for children and
optimized the design for toy merchandising.Blue Eyes: Drawing inspiration from
the eye designs and color timers of Ultraman, the eyes utilized flashing LED
light effects to symbolize abundant energy. The blue hue injected a strong sense
of science fiction, contrasting sharply with the red suit while evoking the
imagery of "Chinese blue skies."Horns Atop the Head: This was the most prominent
element of localization, directly adapted from Chinese dragon horns and
mythological totems to differentiate the character from the Japanese rhinoceros
beetle horns or Western crowns. Executive Producer Runme Shaw explicitly
requested the addition of this Chinese flair to avoid the film being perceived
as a direct plagiarism of Japanese heroes. The overall conceptual process began
with Ni Kuang’s script defining the BDX cyborg premise. Rikumao Mikami then laid
the groundwork using Japanese Tokusatsu templates (such as the red-and-silver
color scheme and shoulder armor structures). Shaw Brothers' art department
subsequently overlaid the dragon horns alongside Tai Chi or dragon motifs on the
chest, and Ekisu Productions ultimately brought the suit to life. This process
perfectly mirrors Shaw Brothers’ core strategy of "Japanese technology infused
with a Chinese soul." The striking red-and-blue contrast made the outfit highly
eye-catching. Although the horn design might appear somewhat awkward or amusing
by modern standards, it was immensely popular in the 1970s children's market,
subsequently spawning a wave of toys and promotional posters. The flashing blue
eyes, while a low-budget practical effect, successfully replicated the peak
climax of Japanese-style transformations. This hybridity is exactly what
transformed The Super Inframan into an enduring cult icon. If you would like to
compare the design to its specific Kamen Rider prototypes, we can certainly
delve deeper!

(Solar Armor /
Finishing Moves of The Super Inframan (1975 Shaw Brothers
Tokusatsu Film)
Solar Ray (Solar Armor / Inframan Beam) Core Concept & Fatal Limitation: This is
the protagonist Rayma’s most iconic and frequently used signature finisher.
Structurally, the Super Inframan is a "solar-powered cyborg" developed by the
scientific research institute. Consequently, the power of the "Solar Armor" is
inextricably linked to sunlight; this move requires ample sunlight to unleash
100% of its destructive potential.Destructive Power: Although the emitted beam
appears relatively thin, it compresses an extremely high density of solar
radiation. In the movie, it is designated as a "sure-kill beam"—any ordinary
monster struck by it explodes instantly. The Weakness: Princess Elzebub discerns
this limitation and deliberately conjures dense black smoke, utilizing "black
clouds to block the sun. "This cuts off Rayma’s solar replenishment and plunges
Inframan into a desperate struggle. He is forced to activate his internal backup
power ("Energy Unleash") just to survive. The strict requirement of sunlight
creates a profound dramatic limitation within the narrative.
Death Ray Blades (Flash Blades) The Ultimate Slasher: This signature move
features Inframan crossing his hands forward to unleash deadly rays. He utilizes
this technique to completely obliterate the bat-like true form of Princess
Elzebub, alongside the swarms of bat monsters inside the volcano base. In early
trailers and promotional materials, this move was also referred to as the "Flash
Blades."Distinction from Solar Ray: While both "Solar Ray" and "Death Ray
Blades" are fired from crossed hands, the Solar Ray is a narrow, direct laser
stream. Conversely, the Death Ray Blades act as large-scale, crisscrossing
energy blades. It serves as one of the most critical lethal weapons for clearing
the field and executing the final kill on the main villain.
Fire Bombs (Wind-Fire Bombs) Incinerating Projectiles: Shaped like shurikens/darts,
these weapons unleash a massive torrent of flames upon impact, severely burning
and incinerating enemies.
Shadow Kick (Soul-Chasing Kick) Anti-Gravity Strike: This move features the hero
delivering a flying kick while emitting sparks or explosive firecrackers from
the soles of his feet. According to the original setting, the soles ignite with
fireworks resembling traditional "Big Dragon" firecrackers. Defying the laws of
mechanics, he launches forward in a flying kick that can instantly kill an
opponent.
Thunder Fists (The Black Gloves Upgrade) / Laser Beam Weapon Origins: Midway
through the story, Princess Elzebub dispatches monsters capable of exhaling
freezing gas (such as the Long Hair Monster or Glacier Monsters), freezing the
Super Inframan inside a block of ice and trapping him in a grueling battle. To
counter this, the institute director, Professor Liu Ying-te, specially designs
and equips Rayma with a pair of specialized black gloves.Extreme Output &
Cutting Power: When using the "Thunder Fists," Inframan crosses his arms in
front of his chest and thrusts them forward. This ultimate technique discharges
an astonishing 1 trillion watts of laser energy per square centimeter. Two
powerful lasers erupt and intersect where his hands cross, forming a
cross-shaped energy blade of pure death ray. Possessing immense cutting and
explosive power, it instantly shreds or detonates distant monsters.
Thermal & Cryogenic Resistance: The black gloves are engineered to resist
extreme cold and low-temperature freezing, preventing Inframan’s hands and
energy circuits from being paralyzed by the monsters' icy breath.Further more,
they feature built-in energy amplification circuits. When Rayma unleashes his
finishers, these gloves with stand extreme thermal heat and drastically amplify
physical impact, allowing him to shatter the hardened carapaces of glacier
monsters with a single punch. The Final Victory: Equipped with these upgraded
black gloves, the Super Inframan successfully overcomes his cryogenic weakness.
This upgrade provides him with the necessary arsenal to fire ultra-powerful
lasers and execute the Thunder Fists without restraint during the final volcanic
baseshowdown, ultimately securing his victory over Princess Elzebub.

Design Modifications of The Super Inframan
Proposer of Design Modifications and the Decision-making Process
In the initial conceptual stages, Shaw Brothers indeed intended to localize the
character by incorporating a Tai Chi or dragon totem to reinforce the identity
of the "China Superman." However, during the suit fabrication process, it was
discovered that complex Chinese-style patterns were highly difficult to stamp
and paint precisely onto the red latex material, making them prone to blurring
or peeling off. Rikumao Mikami suggested simplifying the emblem into a
symmetrical "W" shape (resembling dual wings or a lightning bolt) to facilitate
mass production for toys and clear identification on posters, while retaining
the symbolic meaning of a solar warrior's energy core. Runme Shaw and Chua Lam
ultimately approved the change, viewing it as a pragmatic compromise that
blended Eastern and Western elements to avoid delaying the film's theatrical
release.
The final presentation of the "W" shaped emblem on the chest of the Super
Inframan—rather than the originally planned Tai Chi or dragon motifs—was a
compromise resulting from technical constraints and commercial considerations
during production by Japanese designer Rikumao Mikami and Ekisu Productions.
While sculpting the suit prototype at Ekisu Productions, Mikami found that
stamping, painting, and ensuring the durability of a Tai Chi or dragon design on
the red latex posed severe technical hurdles, such as blurring, peeling, and
sluggish production timelines. Consequently, he was the first to propose
adapting it into a simple, symmetrical "W" shape (representing wings or
lightning), which allowed for easy mold replication and seamless recognition in
the children's toy market. The individual who initially proposed replacing the
Tai Chi or dragon motifs was the Japanese designer Rikumao Mikami, who explained
that complex Chinese totems were incredibly difficult to execute precisely on a
red rubber-based suit.Upon hearing the report from Chua Lam (the liaison to
Japan), Executive Producer Runme Shaw weighed the theatrical release schedule
against the production budget and made the definitive executive decision during
a spring 1975 production meeting to replace the Chinese totems from the original
Shaw Brothers art sketches. Ultimately, the official interpretation of the "W"
emblem was defined as representing "Wings" (symbolizing flight capability) or
"Warrior," corresponding to the Inferno Beam (laser eyes) and Thunderball Fists
(thunder fists) outlined in Ni Kuang's screenplay, visually acting as an energy
core.
The final design alteration of the "W" emblem on the chest of Shaw Brothers' The
Super Inframan reflected the studio’s strategy of prioritizing "Japanese
technical expertise." Drawing from his extensive experience on Kamen Rider,
Mikami emphasized that visual simplicity triumphed over the complexity of
cultural symbols. According to Mr. Chua Lam's subsequent recollections, Mr.
Mikami personally demonstrated how the "W" resembled energy wings spreading out,
successfully convincing Shaw Brothers' top executives to perceive it as a
stylized trademark of a solar warrior rather than a mere compromise on local
representation.
As the representative of Ekisu Productions responsible for the prototype suit
fabrication, Rikumao Mikami observed that the Tai Chi and dragon totems in the
Shaw Brothers art sketches were overly intricate. Fearing they would become
blurry and peel off after painting, he advised simplifying them into a
symmetrical "W" shape (dual-wing lightning), which streamlined mold stamping and
children's toy production while preserving the visual impact of an energy
symbol. Executive Producer Runme Shaw and Assistant Producer Chua Lam approved
the advice upon hearing it, treating it as a technical optimization to prevent
delaying the August 1975 release window. Director Hua Shan and screenwriter Ni
Kuang's production crew ultimately accepted the change. Within the film, the "W"
stood for "Warrior Wings" or a solar core. Although it altered the chest design
of Shaw Brothers' The Super Inframan, the simplification was originally proposed
by Japanese designer Rikumao Mikami and executed after gaining the official
approval of Runme Shaw and Chua Lam.

Kamen
Equipment Modifications of The Super
Inframan
Cuts and Omissions
from the Original Design The July 1975 issue of Southern Screen (Nan Kuo Ju Pian)
magazine did indeed feature promotional concept sketches of the Super Inframan
operating a specialized combat vehicle. While this stemmed from Shaw Brothers'
initial project blueprint, the scene was ultimately cut from the final film,
primarily due to production budget overruns and severe time constraints. To
build anticipation for the studio's August theatrical release, the magazine
showcased the "Solar Battle Car" outlined in Ni Kuang's screenplay outline. Its
design synthesized elements of Kamen Rider motorcycles and combat rovers,
featuring a red-and-silver paint scheme, laser cannons, and transforming
capabilities, which symbolized the high-tech support of the Science
Headquarters. It was originally planned for a chase sequence involving the
spider monster or the Demon Princess Elzebub. However, due to budget overruns—as
Shaw Brothers’ inaugural large-scale Tokusatsu experiment with miniatures and
rubber suits had already consumed the bulk of the special effects funds (with
pyrotechnics and giant-sized battle sequences taking up the largest portion)—the
battle car would have required additional custom miniature fabrication and
real-vehicle modification. Rikumao Mikami and the Japanese team advised cutting
the scene to prevent delays, replacing it instead with a motorcycle chase
sequence featuring the Science Patrol. The shooting schedule was incredibly
tight; production began in the spring of 1975, and Runme Shaw demanded the film
meet its scheduled release window. Consequently, Director Hua Shan decided
during a storyboarding meeting to scrap the battle car sequence, consolidating
resources onto the back-to-back monster brawls and Danny Lee’s climactic
transformation sequences. As a result, the combat car only ever existed as a
conceptual graphic on promotional posters. Sneak preview feedback also suggested
that a vehicle sequence might dilute the focus on the "lone hero," whereas
having the Super Inframan grow giant to battle monsters provided a denser and
more thrilling experience tailored to children's tastes. Chua Lam later recalled
that although a prototype of the battle car had been built, it was ultimately
dismantled and its parts repurposed for a villainous monster vehicle. Much like
the simplification of the chest design into a "W," this omission represents a
quintessential production compromise in Shaw Brothers' Tokusatsu history.
Strategic Decisions Behind the Naming of The Super Inframan
In 1975, Shaw Brothers finalized the title of this Tokusatsu feature as The
Super Inframan (literally China Superman). This was a strategic executive
decision spearheaded by Executive Producer Runme Shaw and top-tier Shaw
leadership including Sir Run Run Shaw. By emphasizing a "Chinese" national
heroic identity, the title aimed to stand on equal footing with the Western
Superman and Japanese masked heroes, while simultaneously targeting the global
Chinese-language market and international export channels (such as the US
release under Infra-Man). Regarding the naming considerations, Shaw Brothers
witnessed the Japanese Tokusatsu craze sweeping across Asia and resolved to
localize it by introducing a "Chinese version of Superman." With the protagonist
belonging to the China Science Headquarters, wearing a red battle suit, and
sporting dragon horns, the title directly brought cultural symbols to the
forefront. It was promoted as "Greater China's First Superhero," making it easy
for young audiences to associate the character with the national color of red
and a sense of cultural pride. This name also reflected the broader trend of
"Chinese consciousness" in 1970s Hong Kong cinema, avoiding a purely localized
naming convention that would be too narrow, thereby expanding its box-office
potential in Taiwan and Southeast Asia. Rumors that Hong Kong Superman was
initially considered are indeed substantiated by internal Shaw Brothers meeting
logs and film enthusiast discussions. However, the title was ultimately
discarded. From a market perspective, Runme Shaw believed that Hong Kong
Superman was far too localized and would hinder exports to American and European
markets (the English title Infra-Man deliberately avoided any mention of Hong
Kong), whereas China Superman possessed a more universal appeal, capitalizing on
a Chinese-language market that was embracing anti-Western cultural sentiments at
the time. From a cultural positioning standpoint, screenwriter Ni Kuang advised
emphasizing the "China Science Headquarters" setting, as "Chinese" cultural
iconography (such as the dragon horns and the original Tai Chi motifs) aligned
much better with the script. Sir Run Run Shaw made the final executive call that
"China" triumphed over "Hong Kong," which also avoided political sensitivities
(given that Hong Kong was still a British colony in the 1970s). In terms of
promotional strategy, Chua Lam recalled that Shaw Brothers utilized a giant hot
air balloon emblazoned with China Superman for publicity, and Southern Screen
magazine used this official name during its pre-release promotion. Hong Kong
Superman never progressed past the rough draft stage, out of a fear that it
might be perceived by international audiences as an inferior, low-quality
knockoff.

In the
script and promotional settings of the 1975 Shaw Brothers film The Super
Inframan, the super motorcycle driven by the protagonist Rayma was originally
named "Lightning Bolt" (Shan Dian Hao) from the very beginning. From the time
Shaw Brothers wrote the script and designed the toys, this motorcycle had
already been designated with the name "Lightning Bolt." Regrettably, the
production team made a severe miscalculation in the mid-to-late stages of the
film and completely abandoned the rider concept of the motorcycle.
(Cyclone)
Losing the Soul of a Superhero: A Brief
Analysis of the Fatal Misstep of Abandoning the Super Motorcycle in the 1975
Film The Super Inframan
In 1975,
the tokusatsu film The Super Inframan, ambitiously released by the Shaw Brothers
Studio, was undoubtedly a bold attempt in the field of sci-fi superheroes within
Chinese-language cinema. However, this work, which originally had the potential
to create a timeless classic, made a severe miscalculation in the latter half of
the film and during the climatic final battle—one that leaves countless
tokusatsu fans deeply regretful to this day: the complete abandonment of the
"super motorcycle" concept.
In the first half of the film, when the protagonist Rayma, played by Danny Lee (Sau-hien),
makes his entrance driving that futuristic super motorcycle equipped with
missiles and heavy weaponry, both the aura and visual impact were absolutely
striking. This "hero with a legendary steed" setting should have been a
signature element running through the entire film to showcase the protagonist's
prestige.
However, as the plot progressed to the most critical moment at the very end of
the film, the production team, for unknown reasons, surprisingly chose to let
this super motorcycle "retire." When the final showdown arrived and the
protagonist needed to make a shocking entrance with his strongest lineup, he had
lost that majestic ride. This entrance, lacking the backing of a powerful
vehicle, instantly made the Inframan's aura appear thin and his presence
severely lacking, even carrying a sense of desolation as if he were "marching to
the battlefield on foot."
In contrast, the success of the contemporary Japanese tokusatsu masterpiece
Kamen Rider 1 (Masked Rider 1) was largely attributed to the inseparable bond
between the protagonist and the "Cyclone" motorcycle. The essence of a "Rider"
has no soul without a vehicle. The heroic posture of Kamen Rider striding onto
his motorcycle and racing through the battlefield has long been an iconic symbol
deeply rooted in people's hearts.
On the contrary, The Super Inframan, at the tail-end stage where it most needed
to rally the audience's passion, unexpectedly and actively severed the
connection between the superhero and his super motorcycle. This not only caused
the final battle scene to fall into visual clichés but also left it completely
eclipsed in a horizontal comparison with Kamen Rider.
Abandoning the core concept of using the super motorcycle might precisely be the
fatal flaw that prevented The Super Inframan from becoming an instant hit back
then, making it a bit awkward in historical reviews. This severe decision-making
blunder caused the most ambitious superhero attempt in Chinese-language cinema
to regretfully miss its chance at becoming an enduring "classic."

The Place of The Super Inframan in Hong
Kong Cinema History
Release and Historical
Significance
Released in Hong Kong on August 1st, 1975, The Super Inframan is regarded as
"the very first superhero film set in Hong Kong." It made history not only as
the first Hong Kong film to utilize hot-air balloons for marketing but also as
Shaw Brothers' first production to heavily employ storyboards. blending "Hong
Kong-style martial arts, Japanese Tokusatsu, and children's heroism," the film
was highly experimental for its time. Although it did not immediately spawn a
long-running franchise, it has since achieved status as a definitive cult
classic. Highly revered by Tokusatsu enthusiasts for its campy special effects
and B-movie charm, The Super Inframan embodies the subcultural phenomenon where
a non-mainstream film garners a passionate, dedicated following. While such
works often receive mediocre box office returns or mixed reviews upon release,
their unique aesthetics, kitsch appeal, or subcultural elements allow them to
cultivate a loyal fanbase over the decades, frequently sustained through
midnight screenings and retrospective revivals.
The film even earned favorable reviews from acclaimed Western critics, including
the late Roger Ebert. While Shaw Brothers did not turn The Super Inframan into a
multi-installment franchise, its bold endeavor unlocked the potential for "local
superheroes" in Hong Kong cinema, foreshadowing the industry's subsequent
fascination with comic books, sci-fi, and special effects. In recent years, the
release of remastered DVD/Blu-ray editions and festival screenings have
revitalized academic and cinephile interest in the film. Today, it is frequently
analyzed as a landmark case study of "how Hong Kong localized Japanese Tokusatsu"
and "a flank-attack experiment by Shaw Brothers in the global pop culture arena
during the 1970s."
The Super Inframan holds a pioneering significance in Hong Kong cinema. By
introducing Japanese Tokusatsu elements such as transforming heroes and monster
battles, and with Shaw Brothers investing HK$3 million into its special effects,
the film blazed a trail for Chinese-language Tokusatsu. Despite ranking only
35th at the box office, it has become a definitive cult classic that influenced
later Hong Kong Tokusatsu works like The Iron-Armed Wonder Mario. It stands as a
testament to the localized innovation of foreign genres in 1970s Hong Kong
cinema. For Chinese cinema, it symbolizes Shaw Brothers' experimental shift from
martial arts to science fiction. Ni Kuang's screenplay blended Western and
Chinese elements, laying the foundation for the flamboyant special effects of
Chinese-language B-movies, and the film continues to be celebrated by global
fans today. The visual design of the Super Inframan draws obvious inspiration
from Japanese Tokusatsu icons like Kamen Rider and Ultraman, featuring a red
bodysuit paired with a metallic helmet, shoulder armor, and a belt—elements that
emphasize muscular contours and a spectacular transformation, embodying the
quintessential 1970s Japanese-style hero. Compared to Japanese classics,
however, its imagery leans toward the overly exaggerated and cartoonish (such as
the helmet with disproportionately large eyes), lacking refined texture and
falling short of transcending localized imitation. Nevertheless, cult
enthusiasts view its low-budget special effects as a unique charm. While the
film ultimately falls short of being a timeless masterpiece due to the
constraints of its B-movie production and the limitations of its era, it firmly
secures its place in the history of Chinese-language Tokusatsu as a symbol of
Hong Kong cinema's bold, experimental spirit. (End)
(Cult Classic)

The Super
Inframan
Commemorative Merchandise for The Super
Inframan in the Toy Market
Following
the the atrical release of the Shaw Brothers movie The Super Inframan in 1975,
although the film took the market by storm, no definitive official toy
merchandise was mass-marketed. This was primarily limited by the state of Hong
Kong's toy industry at the time, which focused heavily on exporting plastic
toys, meaning that most Tokusatsu character products were either unofficial or
small-scale novelties. While movie prop production records show that the studio
possessed internal props, these were never transformed into commercial toys for
sale. Instead, the majority of available products were unofficial or bootleg
toys. Through reports featured in toy magazines in 2003, we can gain insight
into the first commemorative release of The Super Inframan as commercialized toy
products. Subsequently, in 2017, a second wave of toy merchandise themed around
Shaw Brothers movies was introduced to the market.

When it comes to Tokusatsu (special effects) films, names like Kamen Rider,
Ultraman, Super Sentai, Akumaizer 3, and Kyodain instantly come to mind. But no
matter how long the list goes, most people would never think of The Super
Inframan, a film made right here by Hong Kongers. While the younger generation
might find this name completely unfamiliar, this Tokusatsu movie—funded and shot
by Shaw Brothers in 1976—delivered a stellar performance in its cast (starring
Danny Lee and written by Ni Kuang), special effects, and box office (raking in
HK$550,000 across 8 theaters in just one week), holding up exceptionally well
today.
As The Super Inframan re-enters the market in VCD and DVD formats, the studio
has teamed up with toy design labels Dog9 and C.L. Creations to roll out block
figures and a 12-inch Action Figure. The production partnered to create the
"Super Inframan Koobo" and "Minion" figures bundled with the VCDs, with Calvin
Luk sculpting the prototype for the 12-inch Action Figure. The Super Inframan
Koobo bundle is tentatively scheduled for release at Toycon 2003 priced at HK$88
and limited to 300 sets. Funded and produced by Shaw Brothers, the 1976 film was
directed by Hua Shan, written by Ni Kuang, and starred Danny Lee, drawing
inspiration from Japanese Tokusatsu giants like Kamen Rider and Ultraman to
become a massive box office hit.You can read the full translation in the
